Balboa Park. The RHS Girls Varsity Tennis Team qualified five team members to play in the top high school tournament of the year: The CIF Individual Championship Tournament at the Balboa Park Tennis Club. Sophomores Kiera Duffy, Charlotte Boss and Emily McCrory qualified for the first time, and while they did not win their first matches they played well and will undoubtedly be returning next year to move farther in the tournament. Seniors Halli Romero & Chelsea Boss won their first match (6-0, 6-0), and advanced to the round of 32, where they were defeated by a team from Coronado (top team from the Open Division) 1-6, 4-6. “This tournament is unique in high school sports,” said coach Troy Romero. “Most sports play CIF tournaments by Divisions – in this tournament all divisions, including the Open Division, all play in one tournament. One round you might play a team from Calexico and if you win, the next round you might play perennial powerhouse Torrey Pines. That’s what makes this tournament so fun and great for our players – they get an opportunity to see an entire spectrum of tennis skills and players.” RHS Girls Tennis will now be in the off season until it resumes play in August 2019.
